Riding Smooth: Biking Tips From the Saddle

There’s something about a good bike ride that clears the head and lifts the spirit. Whether it's the hum of your tires on the pavement or the quiet rhythm of your breath on a climb, biking has a way of resetting everything. After years of riding — commuting, trail riding, and just cruising on lazy Sundays — I’ve picked up a few habits and tricks that I always share with customers who are just getting into cycling (or getting back into it).

1. Don’t Skimp on the Fit

It’s easy to get excited and hop on the first bike that catches your eye, but trust me — a proper fit makes all the difference. If your seat’s too low or your handlebars too far forward, you’re going to feel it in your knees, back, and shoulders. Swing by the shop and get properly fitted. Your body will thank you.

2. Tire Pressure Is Everything

One of the simplest things you can do to make your ride better is to check your tire pressure. I’ve made the mistake of riding underinflated tires and paid for it with slow, mushy rides and way too many flats. Invest in a floor pump with a gauge, and learn the right PSI for your tires.

3. Ride What Feels Right

I used to think there was a “right” way to ride — lycra kits, clip-in shoes, the whole bit. But honestly? Ride in what feels good and comfortable. Some of my favorite rides have been in sneakers and a windbreaker. The important thing is getting out there.

4. Bring the Basics

No one plans to get a flat, but they happen — often in the middle of nowhere. I always carry a spare tube, tire levers, a mini-pump or CO2, and a multi-tool. It fits in a small saddlebag and has saved me (and strangers) more times than I can count.

5. Keep It Fun

Lastly — don’t forget why you started riding. Some days it’s about the workout, sure, but more often it’s about the joy of moving through the world on two wheels. Explore new routes, stop for coffee, wave at other riders, and don’t take it too seriously.
